Affiliate disclosure
DRAFT: This page is waiting for review. Figures and wording may change before launch.
What an affiliate link is
An affiliate link is a special link to a shop’s website. It tells the shop that you came from our site.
If you click the link and then buy something, the shop may pay us a small amount of money. This is called a commission. Shops do this through affiliate programmes.
Programmes we have joined
- Amazon Associates (UK). As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
(DRAFT: other programmes will be added here if we join them.)
What it costs you
Nothing. You pay the same price whether you use our link or go to the shop yourself. The commission comes out of the shop’s money, not yours.
You never need to buy anything to use our guides or tools.
Why we use affiliate links
Our guides and tools are free. Affiliate links help us pay for writing, checking and hosting the site. We do not show adverts and we do not sell your information.
How we label affiliate links
We follow the advice of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) on how to make affiliate marketing clear. This means you should always be able to tell when a link is an advert before you click it.
On our pages:
- Every affiliate link has the words “(affiliate link)” right next to it.
- On any page with affiliate links, a short line appears above the first affiliate link. It explains that the page contains affiliate links and links to this page.
- Buttons that go to a shop are labelled in the same way.
If you ever find an affiliate link that is not labelled, please tell us at hello@emergencyprepared.co.uk (placeholder) and we will fix it.
Where we never use affiliate links
Some parts of our site are there to keep you informed in an emergency. We keep these free of anything that sells.
We never put affiliate links, adverts or product suggestions:
- on live flood or weather warning panels
- next to local information, such as your area’s warnings, flood service or power cut number
- inside the results of our tools, such as your household plan or water calculation
Our checklists may say what kind of item you need, such as “a torch”. Where we suggest a product, it will be on a separate product guide, clearly labelled.
How affiliate links affect what we recommend
They do not. We choose products based on whether they help you follow the official advice. Whether a shop pays us, and how much, does not decide which products we include or the order they appear in.
We do not accept payment for reviews. We only call a product tested when we have had it in our hands. You can read more in our editorial and testing policy.
Our own products in future
The owner of this site, Matt Harrison-Jones, may launch a range of emergency kits in the future. If that happens:
- we will say clearly, on every page where they appear, that they are our own products
- we will update this page to explain it
- we will still show other products, and we will not present our own kits as independent picks
At the moment, we do not sell any products of our own.
