Accessibility statement
DRAFT: This page is waiting for review. Figures and wording may change before launch.
This statement is for emergencyprepared.co.uk. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this site, including older people, disabled people and people who find reading hard.
Our target
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at Level AAA. WCAG is the international standard for accessible websites. Level AAA is the highest level.
We have not yet had the site checked by an independent auditor, so we cannot yet say that we fully meet this standard. You can read about our testing plans below.
What you can do on this site
Change how the site looks
Our display settings panel lets you:
- make text bigger, up to 200%
- add more space between lines
- choose a light, dark, high-contrast or cream colour theme
- use your device’s own font instead of ours
The site remembers your choices on your device.
How we design every page
- We use the Atkinson Hyperlegible Next font. It was designed to make letters easier to tell apart.
- Text is at least 18 pixels in size.
- Text has a contrast ratio of at least 7 to 1 against its background, so it is easy to see.
- Nothing on the site moves, flashes or slides.
- There are no time limits. You can take as long as you need.
- You can use everything with a keyboard alone.
- Breadcrumbs at the top of each page show where you are on the site.
- We write in plain English, with short sentences.
Other ways to read our content
- Easy Read checklists use simple words and short sentences.
- Print versions of our checklists and household plan.
- A glossary explains words and abbreviations we use.
Using assistive technology
We design the site to work with:
- screen readers, including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack
- voice control software
- zooming in up to 400% without text being cut off or needing to scroll sideways
- forced colours modes, such as Windows Contrast Themes
If something does not work with the technology you use, please tell us.
Parts of the site that are not fully accessible yet
We know about the problems below. We are working on them, and we explain what you can do in the meantime.
Easy Read checklists do not have pictures yet
Easy Read usually uses a picture next to each line of text. Our Easy Read checklists are written in Easy Read style, but they do not have supporting pictures yet. We will add them.
Live warnings use the words of the official source
We show live flood and weather warnings from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and the Met Office in their own words. We do not change them, so that nothing important is lost. Some of this text may be harder to read than the rest of our site.
To help, we add a short plain-English explanation of what each warning level means. We also link to the official source.
Other websites we link to
We link to other websites, such as government services and energy companies. We cannot control how accessible those websites are. If you have trouble with one, please contact that organisation.
Legal pages
Some pages, such as our privacy notice, need to use some legal words. We explain these in plain words on the page and in our glossary.
How we have tested this site
